Who I am.
Maria Sauerland is a dancer, performer and choreographer, currently living and working in Cologne and Hamburg and occasionally in Berlin.
Between 2012 and 2019 she studied dance in Berlin at the Etage, school for performing arts e.V. and in Cologne at the University for Music and Dance.
2018 she joined the Art University Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi in Istanbul, Turkey, for one Erasmus semester.
During and after her studies Maria danced in projects of choreographers like Saskia Assohoto, Jennifer Mann, Yara Dolev, Sigal Zouk, Jan Burkhardt, Yossi Berg, Oded Graf, Malin Harff and Ilona Paszthy.
As a choreographer she is creating her own pieces, sometimes in collaborations with other dancers, musicians, video artists and visual artists. Topics like our relation to nature, to ourselves and to other human beings are especially interesting for her.
These research fields are also interesting for Maria in a political sense, as in her current project "Crossing the line", that is funded by the "Auf-geht's-scholarship" 2022 by the state North-Rhine-Westphalia. In this project she is dealing with the meaning of inner and outer borders and limitations for our freedom to think, move and create.
Maria is also certified as a Yoga and Pilates Teacher and is giving dance trainings and workshops. Her main teaching interests are contact improvisation and partnering.
Furthermore Maria is strongly influenced by her music background. As she grew up in a family of musicians, she went to a highschool with a strong music profile, plays various instruments, of which the pinao is her main instrument that she studied for 15 years, and received singing lessons for the participation in a high level classical choir.
